The indifferent society
An indifferent society. Are we so oblivious to social problems, or is it the State that has turned its back on us? We define society as the group of individuals who share a culture and interact with one another. But in Lima, this is not the case. Over the last 10 years, there has been a high rate of crime, gender-based violence, and young people entering the criminal underworld at a very early age. The recurrence of this trend has become part of our daily lives. Innocent people are harmed by other people’s problems. Stray bullets here affect families seeking justice amidst a sea of unanswered questions. Protests are routine, and their voices of demands are carried away by the wind along with police repression, which continues its work for a modest salary. These are violent times, and we are in a concrete jungle, while some authorities stand idly by. In reality, this is our society, but we haven’t lost hope that this city will rise again.
